I am passionate about the power of storytelling to expose and challenge injustices – and help us understand how to live with humanity in an unjust world.
I’ve been a journalist for more than fifteen years, working on cross-border investigations for much of that time – as well as collaborative projects to make media ecosystems more inclusive of women, LGBTQI people, and people from racialised and working class communities. Recently, I’ve started to experiment with other forms of storytelling too, including more creative writing.
My work is inspired by, and dedicated to, every person, everywhere in the world, who has reached out to others in solidarity – refusing to give up hope in freedom not only for themselves, but for all of us. I believe we should investigate and challenge, rather than applaud and accept, ‘progress’ that only benefits the few.
The image behind me in this photo is a reproduction of the painting ‘Il Quarto Stato’ (The Fourth Estate) by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo. The media is sometimes called ‘the fourth estate’, but here it refers instead to common people rising up as a political force.
Silent Coup: How Corporations Overthrew Democracy
Published by Bloomsbury Academic, May 2023
As European empires crumbled in the twentieth century, the power structures that had dominated the world for centuries were up for renegotiation. Yet instead of a triumph of democracy, what emerged was a silent coup, an unstoppable rise of global corporate power.
Exposing the origins of this epic power grab as well as its present-day consequences, Silent Coup is the result of two investigative journalists’ reports from twenty-five countries around the world. It provides an explosive guide to the rise of a corporate empire that now dictates how resources are allocated, how territories are governed, how justice is defined, and who is safe.
